Chapter Seven

The enticing aroma of cooked apples and cinnamon permeated the air. Numerous booths boasted their goodies.

Hot Apple Cider

Fresh Pressed Apple Cider

Apple Fritters

Apple Jam

Apple Crisp

Caramel Apples

And, of course:

LeeAnne’s Homemade Mini Apple Pies

Everything looked delicious, making it hard for anyone to choose from the array of so much goodness. Along with the food stands, there was a huge variety of booths selling tons of household goods. Crocheted items, travel tumblers, jewelry, candles, soaps, lotions, wood carvings, leatherwork, signs, and anything else one would ever hope to find at any self-respecting festival or craft show.

“I’m surprised you don’t have an entire booth to yourself. I bet you’d have the longest line of anyone here,” Blake told LeeAnne as they walked through the food section of the festival with their kids.

She gestured toward the sign with her name in bold. “They sell my pies. And I like to be free to roam at Apple Fest. The kids are usually involved in something, and I don’t want to miss any of that.”

After she had spoken the words, Blake turned a little subdued. Once LeeAnne reanalyzed the statement, she realized it may have sounded passive-aggressive, though she hadn’t meant it to be. But it was true that Blake hadn’t always been present for things. Could there be any question about that?

Even when they had been together, his being present was often an issue. Blake didn’t seem to understand that financially providing for one’s family wasn’t always enough. They needed not just his money but a husband and father to be there when things were good and things were bad.

If the kids were injured, they should have had both of their parents’ support in healing. If they had a family night at school, they should have gone as an actual “family,” as the name implied.

Blake should have wanted to hang out with all of them after work, at least occasionally. And LeeAnne should have had a husband who wanted to be around her. One who actually talked to her about what he was going through. She hated the way he used to stew...similar to what she was doing now, she supposed.

But this is different. We’re not together anymore, remember?

LeeAnne fought the urge to look at her ex-husband. The man she and the kids had all wanted to be around so much sooner. Why was that so hard for Blake to understand? They shouldn’t have been just an obligation to him. Just one more thing he had to do, like a chore. Blake should have wanted to be around them without having to be asked.

LeeAnne tried to brush all of this away. She wanted to be happy for her kids that their father was here now. That, if nothing else, they could make memories during the time he was in Huckleberry Springs.

After all, she had always wanted him to be here for her and the kids. But now, all she could ask was for him to be here for the kids because LeeAnne had given up any notions that she and Blake could ever get back together.
